Overview Of Social Media

What is Social Media: Consumer generated media that are meant to be shared

Bookmarking and Aggregating:
Social bookmarking allows people to share interesting and relevant content with one another easily. It can also be an excellent tool for members of a company or organization to earmark relevant web sites and articles.

What it does:  Content submitted to a social bookmarking or aggregating site can dramatically increase traffic to a web site, and expose the site to many new eyeballs.
*Example: del.icio.us

What is RSS:

Digg (www.digg.com), Muti (www.muti.co.za) and Reddit (www.reddit.com) are sites where users submit content which other users can then vote on. Popularity, based on votes, moves the submitted content up and down lists which are available on these sites.

Technorati: How is Technorati Authority calculated?
  • Authority is calculated based on a site’s linking behavior, categorization and other associated data over a short, finite period of time. A site’s authority may rapidly rise and fall depending on what the blogosphere is discussing at the moment, and how often a site produces content being referenced by other sites.
  • The new Authority calculation differs from the past version, which measured linking behavior over a longer 6 month timeframe. Please note that links in blogrolls don’t count towards Authority, as they are not indicative of interest in relevant content; we stopped including blogroll links in August 2008.
  • Authority is on a scale of 0-1000. 1000 is the highest possible authority.

A blogroll is a list of links to blogs that the blogger likes. A blogroll is usually included in the blog's sidebar.

Bookmarking and Aggregating as marketing Tools:
Seeing how users categorize your content will give you an idea of how your web site and company are perceived by your audience. It might be remarkably different to what you think they see you as. Look at what other web sites are tagged similarly. You might find new competitors, and possibly new ideas.

Content Sharing: Users share images, audio and information as well as video. If it can be created, it can be shared.

Many marketers have adopted the opportunities afforded by YouTube. There are two aspects of marketing through YouTube - self-promotion of people and products such as music videos, movie previews, interviews, video-advertisements, and sponsored adverts, supplied by Google AdWords.

Crowdsourcing – unleashing the power of the online community. Simply put, business and corporates invite the public to submit ideas and innovations for new and existing products, in exchange for a once-off or a small percentage of future royalties.

Social Networking: Social networking refers to the forming and substantiating of online social networks for communities of people. Tends to rely on advertising for their revenue. Because of demographic information collected by the social networks, advertisers are able to target their adverts to a particular audience.

Blogs Basing your blog on your keyword strategy created in the SEO process can also aid your web site in ranking for those key phrases. Blogs, by their social nature, can also increase the incoming links to your web site.

Facebook
Twitter

This week I want you to create a Facebook page for your blog. Remember, we are treating our blogs as if they are a product or a brand. You can start the process of creating a page here.

1) Fill out the basic information page.
2) Upload a picture
3) Add a Facebook Like button to your blog
4) Get people to like your blog. Each week for the rest of the semester, the person with the most likes will get 2 points added to their quiz score. This is even if you have a perfect score.
5) When you submit your safe-assignment for the week, include your facebook page URL.
6) If you do not complete this on time you will get a zero for the week plus I will give you a zero for the quiz. This is not an assignment you can skip.

Then:

When you are done reading the articles (See below), please complete the following:
2) Search for "Comcast" , and search for "Comcast sucks"
3) Take a look at some of the Tweets you see and write a paragraph about your observations. What jumps out at you? What are your impressions from a customer service standpoint? How would you manage Comcast customer service through Twitter?
4) Include your paragraph at the end of your blog post submission for safe assign.
5) Download and install Tweetdeck on your computer.
6) Link your twitter to it (and anything else you want).
7) Write one post on Tweetdeck to show on your Twitter account
